GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Spring Arbor University men's basketball battled but came up just short in a 75-71 road loss to Cornerstone University on Saturday at the Crossroads League/WHAC Challenge.
The two sides played evenly through the first 20 minutes, heading into halftime deadlocked at 37-37. In the second half, the teams traded the lead back-and-forth before Cornerstone used a 12-0 run to create separation.
The Cougars fought back to get within four with less than 20 seconds to play, but the Golden Eagles were able to convert at the free throw line to escape with the win.
Shane Rykse led SAU with 15 points while
Dante Favor turned in 13 points and 9 rebounds—just one board shy of another double-double.
David Cundiff added 11 points and six assists.
Spring Arbor finished the game shooting 46 percent from the field and 38 percent (8-for-21) from three-point range, but went just 9-of-19 from the charity stripe. Cornerstone shot 44 percent overall and held a 42-37 edge on the glass.
The Cougars (0-2) return home on Tuesday, Nov. 4 for their home opener against Kuyper College at 11 a.m. The matchup marks the program's fourth annual Field Trip Game, where SAU welcomes local elementary and middle school students to the McDonald Athletic Center for a special gameday experience.
