SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – The Spring Arbor University women's basketball team stayed perfect on the season, earning a 74-62 win over Huntington University in the Crossroads League opener Wednesday night inside the McDonald Athletic Center.
The Cougars improved to 6-0 behind a balanced offensive effort and a disruptive defensive performance that forced the Foresters, who are receiving votes in the national poll, into a season-high 29 turnovers.
Ashley Weller delivered a breakout night, pouring in a career-high 24 points on an efficient 9-for-11 shooting.
Megan Zeitz followed with 20 points while
Emma Smieska continued her strong start to the year with 18 points, seven rebounds and a season-high six steals.
Spring Arbor set the tone early, turning defensive pressure into transition opportunities and taking a 33-23 lead into halftime. Huntington made a couple pushes in the second half, cutting into SAU's double-digit lead, but each time the Cougars had an answer and clinched the game at the free throw line down the stretch.
The Cougars will be back in action on Saturday, Nov. 22 when they travel to Indianapolis to face No. 4 Marian University (6-0, 1-0 CL) starting at noon.
