The Spring Arbor University baseball team dropped two games on Thursday afternoon to open the spring portion of their season, falling to MidAmerica Nazarene 5-1, and Columbia 8-0.

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS
- MidAmerica Nazarene got on the board early, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first on a 2-run single and a first and third steal play.
- Spring Arbor starter Ryan Ruhlman settled in nicely after the rocky first frame, posting 3 straight scoreless innings, and working into the fifth inning. Ruhlman's final line was 4.1 innings pitched, 6 hits, 4 earned runs, 1 walk, and 3 strikeouts.
- MidAmerica Nazarene added another run in the 5th on an RBI groundout before Spring Arbor responded in the next half inning on a Ryan Gonzalez RBI single. The Pioneers would add a final insurance run in the 6th on a wild pitch.
- Jake Zeeb was a lone bright spot for the Cougar offense, going 2 for 2 with a walk. Brenden Phillips and Ryan Gonzalez accounted for the other two Cougar knocks of the contest.
GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS
- Spring Arbor was unable to muster much offensively, threatening on three different occasions but failing to bring a run across.
- Columbia scored in all but one inning, recording single runs in the 1st, 2nd, 5th, 6th, and 7th innings, while pushing 3 across in the 4th.
- Kyler Hinken got the start for Spring Arbor and struggled with control, going 3 innings, allowing 6 hits, 4 runs, and 3 earned, while walking 3 and striking out 1. Five other Cougar arms took the mound out of the bullpen, including Freshmen southpaw Brady Mitchell who made his first ever appearance on the bump and recorded his first career strikeout, punching out the only batter he faced.
- Ryan Gonzalez paced the offense, continuing his hot start to the spring, going 3 for 3, including a double. Jake Spedoske was 1 for 3 with a triple, while Landon Raczkowski, Joey Tessmer, and Jake Zeeb all added singles.

Spring Arbor will take on MidAmerica Nazarene and Columbia once again tomorrow at MidAmerica Sports Complex. The Cougars will play MNU at 12:00 PM and then Columbia right after at 2:30 PM
