Softball drops two one-run games at Taylor

UPLAND, Ind. – The Spring Arbor University softball team lost two games, both by one run, at Taylor University on Monday. The Trojans scored in the bottom of the seventh to walk-off with a 5-4 win in game one before edging the Cougars 2-1 in game two.

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS
  • Taylor jumped on top with three runs in the bottom of the first inning.
  • Emilee Underwood got the Cougars within one, 3-2, after blasting a two-run home run in the third inning.
  • After the Trojans pushed a run across in the fifth to stretch their lead to two, 4-2, SAU answered in the sixth inning with solo homers by Summer Ambler and Payton Grange to tie the score.
  • In the bottom of the seventh, Taylor had runners at second and third with one out. The next batter lined out, and looking to double off the runner at third base, the throw would get away allowing the go-ahead run to score.
  • Grange and Underwood collected two hits each, including a home run apiece.
  • Underwood tossed 6.2 innings and allowed four earned runs on six hits while striking out six batters.
 
 
GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS
  • Taylor was able to grab an early lead again in game two with a run in the first inning.
  • Spring Arbor tied the game in the third when Anna Kemp scored on a wild pitch.
  • That was how the score stayed until the bottom of the sixth when the Trojans got a clutch two-out hit to bring home the go-ahead run.
  • The Cougars threatened in the seventh, putting the tying run on second base with no outs, but Taylor was able to retire the next three hitters to hold on.
  • Megan Bondy and Elaina Walker had SAU's only hits of the game.
  • Ava Poulson pitched six innings and allowed just two runs on seven hits while fanning nine.
 
 
UP NEXT
Spring Arbor returns home to host Bethel University (7-11, 2-2 CL) on Tuesday, Mar. 18. Game one of the doubleheader is set to start at 3 p.m.
