Cougars post two shutout victories at Grace

WINONA LAKE, Ind. – The Spring Arbor University softball team swept a doubleheader against Grace College on Thursday behind a pair of sensational pitching performances from Emilee Underwood and Ava Poulson.
 
The duo combined to toss 16 shutout innings while allowing just three hits as the Cougars claimed game one 13-0 and posted a 5-0 victory in game two.

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS
  • Spring Arbor led 1-0 through two innings but expanded its lead in the third with four runs – highlighted by back-to-back triples by Brooke Meeker and Taylor Clark.
  • The Cougars broke things wide open with five runs on five hits in the fourth inning before adding three more runs in the fifth.
  • The 13 runs were a season-high for SAU.
  • Clark led the way going 3-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Meeker also knocked in three while finishing with two hits and three runs scored. Elaina Walker and Emilee Underwood added two hits each.
  • Underwood was terrific in the circle tossing her second complete game shutout of the season. The sophomore hurler went five innings and allowed just one hit while striking out three batters.
 
 
GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS
  • Freshman pitcher Ava Poulson delivered another gem in game two of the twinbill. Poulson also recorded her second complete game shutout of the season while limiting the Grace offense to only two hits.
  • Spring Arbor got on the scoreboard in the third inning when Sarah Stewart scored on a sacrifice fly by Nicole Barbeau.
  • The Cougars added another run in the fifth inning on an RBI single by Meeker.
  • Spring Arbor padded its lead with three runs in the seventh. Lexi Cain drove in a pair with a triple and Payton Grange sent Cain home with a base hit.
  • Summer Ambler and Stewart finished with two hits apiece.
