Softball sweeps Goshen in home finale

SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – The Spring Arbor University softball team closed out its home slate with two wins over Goshen College on Tuesday afternoon. A solo home run by Matajia Cerroni and a complete game shutout by Emilee Underwood lifted the Cougars to a 1-0 victory in the opening contest and SAU held on to defeat the Maple Leafs 4-3 in the nightcap.
 
Spring Arbor is getting hot at the right time of the year. The Cougars have now won four in a row and seven of their last eight.

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS
  • Spring Arbor got all the offense it needed in the third inning when Matajia Cerroni blasted a solo home run over the centerfield fence. It was her second long ball of the season.
  • Emilee Underwood was terrific in the circle spinning her fifth complete game shutout of the season. The sophomore pitcher held Goshen scoreless over seven innings and gave up just four hits while striking out seven.
  • Kennadi Killeen had two of SAU's five hits in the game, including a double.
 
 
GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS
  • Spring Arbor trailed 1-0 after two innings of play, but the Cougars pushed two runs across in the third to take the lead. Sarah Stewart scored on a perfectly executed squeeze bunt by Summer Ambler and, later in the inning, Cerroni crossed the plate followed a Goshen error.
  • An inning later, SAU added to its lead with an RBI triple by Grace Luby. She would also come around to score on a groundout by Payton Grange.
  • Goshen scored twice in the fifth inning to get within one run, 4-3, but the Cougars would hold on to complete the doubleheader sweep.
  • Ava Poulson earned her eighth win of the season in the circle. The freshman pitcher allowed just one earned run over 5.1 innings of work. Underwood pitched 1.2 innings of relief to record the save.
