FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Spring Arbor University volleyball team extended its unbeaten start to the 2025 season on Friday, collecting two more wins on the opening day of the Onset Invitational. For the second straight weekend, the Cougars outlasted Indiana University East in a five-set battle before sweeping Defiance College to move to 6-0.
Spring Arbor 3, Indiana East 2
Scores: 23–25, 25–18, 25–8, 23–25, 15–13
Spring Arbor opened the day with a gritty five-set victory over Indiana East. The Red Wolves struck first with a tight 25–23 win in the opening set, but the Cougars answered by taking the second and third sets. IU East regrouped in the fourth to force the decisive fifth set.
In the final frame, the Cougars rose to the occasion. Behind a 6-2 run – keyed by a pair of kills from
Natasha Bickel – SAU pulled away and held on late to seal the match.
Kendall Bollenbacher and
Kelsie Lilly led the way with 11 kills each while Bollenbacher also added 13 digs.
Isabelle Kirkendall,
Keely Hinzman and Bickel all added nine kills apiece with Hinzman also recording eight blocks.
Camy Wedge and
Gabby Bryja kept the Cougar attack balanced, combining for 45 assists, while libero
Aliza Munro anchored the back row with a team-high 18 digs.

Scores: 25-19, 25-21, 25-20
The Cougars carried their momentum into the evening match, earning a sweep over Defiance to close out the day. SAU's offense was sharp from the opening serve, hitting .262 while holding the Yellow Jackets to just .083.
Kirkendall led the charge with 12 kills on .462 hitting, finding little resistance from the Defiance defense. Bollenbacher and Lilly continued their steady play at the net, combining for 18 kills and six blocks, while setters Wedge and Bryja dished out 19 and 12 assists, respectively, to keep the attack humming.
Defensively, Munro collected 14 digs, and
Palmer Fortress added nine as the Cougars limited Defiance to just 27 kills across the three sets.
Spring Arbor returns to action on Saturday with two more matches to close out the Onset Invitational. The Cougars play the University of Rio Grande at 11 a.m. and Rochester Christian University at 3:30 p.m.
