Esports Weekly Recap: Week of Sept. 28

The Spring Arbor University esports program continued its fall season last week with Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and Rocket League in action, highlighted by team victories over the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay and Binghamton University.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

Spring Arbor's SSBU team earned a 2-0 victory over the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay on Monday, Sept. 28. Green Bay entered the matchup as the No. 2-rated team in the Cougars' group.

TJ "salto" Gerweck set the tone in the opening game, taking five stocks as Spring Arbor earned a 12-6 victory.

Game 2 came down to the final stock. Karrson "Inferno" Verus led the way with seven stocks, giving him 12 for the match, as the two teams battled to an 11-11 deadlock. With both remaining players at kill percentage, Gerweck secured the final stock with an up-tilt to give SAU the 12-11 win and complete the 2-0 sweep.

The Cougars return to action Monday at 8 p.m. against Indiana University East.

SSBU 1v1

Four Cougars competed in Gateway Esports SSBU 1v1 action on Wednesday, Sept. 30. Their updated records are:

Rocket League

Spring Arbor picked up its first Rocket League victory of the season Thursday with a 4-1 win over Binghamton University.

The Cougars came out quickly, cruising to a 5-0 victory in Game 1 behind a hat trick from Jaden "jayd'" Allen. SAU carried the momentum through the next two games to build a 3-0 advantage in the series.

Binghamton extended the match with a victory in Game 4, but Spring Arbor responded with a 3-0 win in Game 5 to close out the series.

The Cougars returned to action Saturday as part of Homecoming Weekend, hosting Indiana Wesleyan University live in the Cougar Den.

After dropping three competitive games to open the match, Spring Arbor responded with a 6-2 victory in Game 4. Broden "broturtle13" Cobb powered the Cougars with a hat trick.

SAU followed with a narrow Game 5 victory, scoring late to cut the series deficit to 3-2. The Cougars were unable to complete the reverse sweep, however, as Indiana Wesleyan captured Game 6 to take the match 4-2.

Spring Arbor's Rocket League team returns to action Thursday at 8 p.m. against Dominican University New York.
