SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – Spring Arbor University's
Claire VanZanten has been named the Crossroads League Women's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week following a six-goal week that included back-to-back hat tricks.
VanZanten helped the Cougars to a pair of conference victories last week, combining for six goals in wins over Huntington University and No. 10 Taylor University.
The junior opened the week with a hat trick in Spring Arbor's 5-0 victory over Huntington on Wednesday. VanZanten scored twice in a span of 92 seconds during the first half before completing the hat trick in the 56th minute. The three-goal performance helped the Cougars post a season-high five goals in the win.
VanZanten followed with another three-goal performance Saturday as SAU earned a 3-0 road victory over No. 10 Taylor. After a scoreless opening half, she broke the tie in the 53rd minute before adding goals in the 73rd and 85th minutes to secure her second consecutive hat trick.
The victory handed Taylor its first home loss of the season after the Trojans entered the match 7-0-1 on their home field. It also extended Spring Arbor's winning streak to three matches, with the Cougars outscoring their opponents 11-0 during that stretch.
VanZanten now leads Spring Arbor with 11 goals and 24 points this season. Five of her 11 goals have been game-winners. She also has two assists and has scored 24 goals during her Cougar career.
Spring Arbor, ranked No. 18 in the latest NAIA National Selection Committee Top 25 Poll, is 9-2-1 overall and 3-1 in Crossroads League play. The Cougars return to action Saturday, Oct. 10, traveling to Mount Vernon Nazarene University for a 5 p.m. kickoff.
