Softball Splits First Day at Space Coast Games

MELBOURNE, Fla. – The Spring Arbor University softball team opened play at The Space Coast Spring Games with a split on its first day in Florida, falling 2-1 to Columbia International University before bouncing back for a 4-3 win over Trinity College of Jacksonville.

The Cougars now sit at 5-1 overall on the season.

Game One | CIU 2, SAU 1

It was a classic pitcher's duel between Emilee Underwood and CIU's Raleigh Stewart in the opener. The game remained scoreless through three innings before Spring Arbor broke through in the fourth. Taylor Clark crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly by Grace Luby to give SAU a 1-0 edge.

The Rams answered in the bottom half of the inning, pushing two runs across to take a 2-1 lead. The Cougars threatened in both the fifth and sixth innings, placing a runner in scoring position each time, but were unable to come up with the timely hit.

SAU was limited to just two hits – one each from Clark and Matajia Cerroni.

Underwood was strong in the circle despite taking her first loss of the season. The right-hander allowed just one earned run on four hits over six innings while striking out seven.

Game Two | SAU 4, Trinity 3

Spring Arbor responded in its second game of the day.

The Cougars struck first in the second inning when Taylor Mydlarz delivered an RBI single. Trinity answered with two runs in the fourth, but SAU quickly evened the score in the bottom half as Megan Bondy drove in a run with an RBI single.

The Cougars grabbed the lead for good in the fifth. Clark opened the inning with a double to left, and Summer Ambler followed with a triple to right to bring her home. Luby then plated Ambler with a single to center to make it 4-2.

Trinity trimmed the deficit to one with a run in the sixth, but Ava Poulson closed the door. The junior tossed a complete game, allowing three runs on five hits while striking out six, and retired the Eagles in order in the seventh to secure her first win of the season.

Clark led the offense with two hits, including a double, in the nightcap while Ambler and Grace Lentz recorded triples.

Spring Arbor returns to action Saturday, Feb. 28 at with matchups against the University of Michigan–Dearborn at 10 a.m. and Calumet College of St. Joseph at 12:15 p.m.
