SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – The Spring Arbor University softball team split a Crossroads League doubleheader on Friday at the Cougar Softball Field, walking off with a 1-0 win in game one before falling 4-1 in the nightcap to Huntington University.
The Cougars move to 24-20 overall and 15-15 in conference play.
Game one featured a pitcher's duel between
Emilee Underwood and Huntington's Kinzie Mollenkopf, with both teams held scoreless through six innings.
Underwood retired the Foresters in order in the top of the seventh to set up a chance for a walk-off finish. With two outs,
Summer Ambler drew a walk to spark the rally, and
Grace Luby followed with a single up the middle to move Ambler to third.
Brooke Meeker then delivered the game-winner, lining a base hit past third base to score Ambler and secure the 1-0 victory.
Payton Grange led the offense, going 2-for-2, while
Megan Bondy also recorded two hits. Underwood earned her 14th win of the season with a complete game shutout, allowing five hits and striking out three.
In game two, Huntington struck first with a run in the second inning and added an unearned run in the fourth.
Spring Arbor answered in the bottom half of the fourth to cut the deficit to 2-1, but the Foresters responded with two runs in the fifth to extend their lead and hold on for the 4-1 win.
Grace Lentz went 2-for-2 at the plate, while Meeker added a hit and scored the Cougars' lone run.
Alexyn DuBois took the loss in the circle, allowing four runs – two earned – over 4.2 innings.
Tammy Craven provided 2.1 innings of scoreless relief.
