WINONA LAKE, Ind. – The Spring Arbor University softball team picked up a pair of Crossroads League wins on the road on Saturday, defeating Grace College 8-1 and 15-2 in five innings.
The Cougars improve to 26-20 overall and 17-15 in conference play.
In game one, Spring Arbor wasted no time getting on the board, erupting for five runs in the opening inning.
Matajia Cerroni delivered the key hit with a three-RBI double to highlight the frame.
That proved to be more than enough support for SAU's pitching staff.
Emilee Underwood earned the win, allowing just one run on four hits while striking out four.
Ava Poulson added two scoreless innings in relief.
Offensively,
Summer Ambler and
Grace Luby led the way with three hits apiece, with both players scoring twice.
In game two, the Cougars held a narrow 2-1 lead through two innings before breaking the game open with a six-run third inning. Spring Arbor added two more runs in the fourth and plated five in the fifth to bring the run-rule into effect.
SAU totaled 15 runs – its highest scoring output of the season – on 17 hits.
Brooke Meeker had a standout performance, going 4-for-4 with two doubles, three RBIs and three runs scored. Luby,
Nicole Barbeau,
Payton Grange and
Grace Lentz each added two hits.
Alexyn DuBois earned the win in the circle, allowing two runs on six hits while striking out three over five innings.
Spring Arbor will return to action on Tuesday, April 21, traveling to Goshen College before closing out the regular season at home against Mount Vernon Nazarene University on Saturday, April 25.
