Men’s Soccer Tops Governors State to Remain Unbeaten

SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – The Spring Arbor University men's soccer team continued its unbeaten start to the season with a 2-1 victory over Governors State University on Saturday night at the Cougar Soccer Complex.

Spring Arbor improved to 3-0 on the year, while Governors State fell to 0-3-1.

The Cougars opened the scoring in the 36th minute when Caleb Swartzendruber converted a penalty kick, sending SAU into halftime with a 1-0 advantage.

Spring Arbor appeared to double its lead early in the second half when Pedro Rosa found the back of the net, but the goal was taken off the board following an official review.

The Cougars did not have to wait much longer for their second goal. In the 59th minute, Micah Vasey set up Ryan Nees, who finished the opportunity to extend the Spring Arbor lead to 2-0.

SAU remained in control for much of the second half, but Governors State generated a late opportunity to make things interesting. Goalkeeper Tommy Farrell made a diving save on the initial attempt, but the rebound fell to the Jaguars' Mohammad Deifallah, who scored to cut the deficit to 2-1 in the closing moments.

Governors State made one final push for the equalizer, but the Cougars held off the Jaguars in the final seconds to secure their third consecutive victory to begin the season.

Spring Arbor finished with a 17-7 advantage in shots and generated nine corner kicks compared to four for Governors State. Farrell and Soren Goubely Dondaine each recorded two saves in goal for SAU.

The Cougars hit the road Tuesday, Sept. 1 for a matchup with Albion College. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
