MARION, Ind. – The Spring Arbor University men's tennis team competed at the ITA Midwest Regional Championship Sept. 23-26 in Marion, Indiana, highlighted by
Aziz Madatov's run to the singles quarterfinals.
Madatov won three matches in the main draw, while
Miguel Carvalho reached the singles consolation final.
Jakub Sevcik and
MacKinley McNalley also earned a runner-up finish in the doubles consolation bracket.
Seeded seventh, Madatov opened with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Taylor's Joseph Harper following a first-round bye. He defeated Grace's Mahefa Anthony Rakotomalala 6-3, 7-5 and Marian's Juan Garcia Tunon Gonzalez 6-2, 6-4 before falling to third-seeded Mateo Batista of Huntington in the quarterfinals.
Daniel Rodriguez Fortes advanced to the round of 16 with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Grace's Manuel Marques and a victory over teammate McNalley. Rodriguez Fortes then pushed top-seeded Julian Tantera of Huntington to a match tiebreaker before falling 6-2, 4-6, 10-6.
Carvalho rebounded from an opening loss to Tantera with wins over Indiana Wesleyan's Lewie Woody, Grace's Marques and Marian's Luke Harris in consolation play. He advanced past teammate
Jacob Liao by walkover in the semifinals before falling 8-4 to Indiana Wesleyan's Michail Klinkov in the final. Carvalho finished 4-2 in singles.
Liao reached the consolation semifinals with an 8-1 victory over Indiana Wesleyan's Damian Tejada, a walkover and an injury-retirement win. Sevcik, McNalley and
Jaume Riera Galindo each added a main-draw singles victory.
In doubles, Sevcik and McNalley advanced by walkover before defeating teammates
Erik Alday Morales and Liao 8-6 in the consolation quarterfinals. They followed with a 9-7 win over Taylor's Caleb Taflinger and Joshua Dawson, then fell 8-6 to Indiana Wesleyan's Riley Fuqua and Carter Poquette in the final to finish 3-2.
Madatov and Rodriguez Fortes added an 8-1 doubles victory over Marian's Benjamin O'Brien and Caleb Mohr before exiting in the round of 16.
Spring Arbor welcomes Cedarville and Olivet Nazarene to the Jones Tennis Complex on Saturday, Oct. 10.
