The Spring Arbor University women's soccer team won their second straight match by defeating Mount Vernon Nazarene University 2-0 in the final day of the Step One Soccer Too Classic Tournament today.
The Lady Cougars used a pair of second half goals to push their record to 2-3 early in a season that has seen four of five opponents that were ranked in the NAIA top 25 last year.
Spring Arbor opened the scoring in the 70th minute when Katie Sayler got on the end of a Heidi Sharp service and slammed it home to the near post for her third goal of the season. Sophomore Krisitn Abbott (right) gave the Cougars some insurance when she beat the MVNU goalkeeper to a Megan Cogan pass and bent the ball in to the empty net from a sharp angle with her right foot. The goal was Abbott's first of the season.
Freshman Samantha Suter went the distance in the goal for Spring Arbor, picking up her first solo shut out with seven saves on the day.
"We weren't at our best today," commented SAU head coach Jason Crist. "We got some timely finishing against a fired up MVNU squad who played very hard. While we controlled most of the possession and tempo in the match, there are some areas where we need continued improvement in as we look ahead to next week."
The Cougars will face off with long time rival Siena Heights at home on Tuesday before returning the trip to Mount Vernon Nazarene University where they will face off with Judson College (IL) and Notre Dame College (OH) in the Mount Vernon Classic. Tuesday's game with Siena will begin at 4:00 p.m.
