The Spring Arbor University women's soccer team notched an important 4-1 win over conference foe Taylor University on Tuesday, improving their record to 10-4 overall and their MCC conference mark to 3-1.
The Cougars continued the balanced attack that they have been displaying all year long, as four different players found the back of the net to secure the victory.
Spring Arbor controlled the opening 45 minutes of play, but did not tickle the twine until the 37th minute of play when senior Christina Riske got on the end of fellow senior Rachel Sinkovitz's curling corner kick and nodded one past Taylor goalkeeper Corrie Sehr to open the scoring and give the Cougars a 1-0 lead.
Juniors Jalese DeBiasi and Alyssa Curtis hooked up for the second goal of the match just two minutes later as DeBiasi ran on to a Curtis lead pass and popped a short chip over the top of Sehr and off the bottom of the crossbar to give SAU a 2-0 cushion heading into the intermission.
Spring Arbor picked up right where they left off in the second stanza, when sophomore Maegan Smith threaded a perfect pass through the Taylor defense to a streaking Kristin Abbott. Abbott sent a low missile past Sehr and into the bottom right corner of the net to make it 3-0.
Taylor clawed one back when freshman Molly Drooger came up with a loose ball off a long service into the Cougar penalty area and toe-poked the ball past SAU netminder Lauren Weber Wright to make the score 3-1 in the 66th minute.
The hope was short-lived for the hosts however. A good hustle play by Spring Arbor freshman Chloe Maxwell earned the Cougars a corner kick in the 78th minute and Abbott stepped to the flag and delivered a perfect ball to the back post where Sinkovitz was waiting to head in the dagger goal and put the game out of reach.
"Taylor has a young and talented program," commented SAU head coach Jason Crist. "Everyone in the MCC defends their home turf with a lot of energy and vigor. It's our schedule that prepares us for matches like this. Playing tough, ranked competition game in and game out has prepared our players for conference matches. We still have a lot to work on, however and we will look to improve on this effort on Saturday."
Spring Arbor will welcome Grace College (7-6-1 / 2-1-1) to campus for their next match on Saturday, October 16th. The game is scheduled to kick off at 1:00 p.m.
