A lot of things were on the line for the SAU men's tennis team on Saturday in their regular season finale against Huntington . First, the Cougars had a chance to complete an undefeated conference season, which they managed to do with a 7-2 win. Second, the undefeated #1 doubles team of
Thomas Calderone and
Aaron Mayes were matched up against another undefeated team, ITA midwest regional champions Vladamir Khudziy and Augusto Velez, so someone had to suffer their first loss. In this case the Cougars were victorious with an 8-4 victory. At #1 singles it was also a battle of two players who were undefeated in conference play, Khudziy (also the winner of the ITA midwest regional tennis tournament) and
David Darling. Once again the Cougars prevailed with Darling surviving in a 7-5, 0-6, 7-6 (5) nail biter.
Other winners for Spring Arbor included
Aaron Mayes at #3 singles (6-2, 6-3), Rafael Schuster at #4 singles (6-2, 7-6) and
Andrew DeBruyn won by a score of 6-2, 5-7, 10-8. In doubles, the Cougars had quality wins at #2 doubles (Darling-Schuster) and #3 doubles (
Nathan Scholten and
Matt Wojtkowski).
The Cougars open their season-ending conference tournament on Tuesday as the top seed, hosting Bethel on Tuesday at 4:00.
