The Spring Arbor University women's soccer team notched an important win Wednesday night as they dropped the third place team in the Mid Central Conference the Huntington University Foresters 4-1.
On a blustery night with driving rain and wind gusts upward of 40 mph, the Cougars shot out of the gate offensively, as
Braydan Wiles notched her third goal of the season with a long range effort over the top of HU goalkeeper Sam Barclay in the 15th minute of play. Sophomore
Karly Linton was credited with the assist on the play.
Huntington responded quickly when Claire Creasy got loose on a counter attack and rifled home a long range bomb over her own over an outstretched
Brooklyn Morgan.
It was all SAU from there, as
Karly Linton took a throw in from junior
Megan Wegener ten minutes before halftime and weaved through a pair of defenders on her way to the goal before beating Barclay to the lower left corner to make it 2-1 SAU. Freshman
Clara Williams got in on the act just moments later when she took a drop pass from fellow freshman
Megan Colby and unleashed a laser that found its way through traffic in the HU box and past Barclay to increase the lead to 3-1 SAU.
Junior
Maegan Smith capped off the scoring for Spring Arbor three minutes after the halftime break when Linton fed her a ball through the left side of the Forester defense and Smith cranked a left footed shot that found it's way past Barclay to make the final score 4-1 in favor of the hosts.
Morgan stopped one shot in sixty five minutes of play before giving way to freshman
Kelly Reszka. Reszka picked up four saves in the final 25 minutes as both teams emptied their benches.
Spring Arbor moved to 13-2-1 on the season and 6-1 in MCC play and Huntington falls to 9-4-3 and 3-2-2 in MCC loop play.
The Cougars will travel to Goshen, Indiana on Saturday for a 7 p.m. tilt with the Goshen College Maple Leafs. Spring Arbor needs to win its two final MCC matches in order to keep a strangle hold on the race for the MCC crown.
