The Spring Arbor University women's soccer team wrapped up the 2011 MCC regular season championship with a 5-1 road victory over Goshen College on Saturday.
The Cougars wasted little time putting the Maple Leafs on their heels. In the second minute of play junior
Maegan Smith beat her defender on the wing and whipped a ball into the Goshen penalty area where freshman
Courtney Harrison met it at the near post and muscled the ball through a defender and past GC goalkeeper Liz Weaver for the opening goal of the game.
Smith notched the second tally herself, when she she snapped a header past Weaver off a service from
Ashley DeNio in the 15th minute of play. Spring Arbor enjoyed a 2-0 cushion heading into halftime and out-shot the Maple Leafs 18-3 in the first frame.
Smith was back at it just after halftime. The Hickory Corners, Michigan native took a pass from DeNio and sped past the Goshen left back before beating Weaver from eight yards out. Just three minutes later Smith secured her fourth hat trick of the season by corralling a
Megan Wegener corner kick and blasting it past Weaver to make the score 4-0 in favor of SAU in the 56th minute of play. Smith, who leads the MCC with 20 goals, secured the three markers in just 48 minutes of playing time.
Junior
Cheyenne Martinez-Trevino made the score 5-0 when she got on the end of a corner kick from
Megan Colby and ripped a shot through traffic and past Weaver for her second goal of the season.
Goshen spoiled the clean sheet for SAU in the 70th minute when Brianne Mault blooped a near thirty yard shot over SAU freshman goalkeeper
Kelly Reszka who had come in the game in relief of starter
Brooklyn Morgan.
Spring Arbor owned the stat sheet, firing 29 shots in the contest, and putting an amazing 23 of those on frame. Goshen managed seven shots with four attempts on goal.
The win, combined with a loss by Grace College wrapped up the MCC championship for the Lady Cougars, who will enjoy home field advantage through the MCC post season tournament as the #1 seed for the event.
Spring Arbor sits at 14-2-1 overall and 7-1 in MCC loop play. There is still much to be decided in the final conference game of the season as many teams are jockeying for position and seeds in the upcoming tournament.
The Lady Cougars will face off with the University of St. Francis in their final MCC regular season match. Spring Arbor will honor senior sisters Alyssa and Angie Curtis in the pre-game festivities. The match will kick off at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 25th on Spring Arbor's new soccer complex.
