The Spring Arbor University women's soccer team had to wait a while, but
eventually got what they were looking for with a 2-0 win over the
University of St. Francis Cougars in a game that almost didn't happen.
In what turned out to be a very physical battle, Spring Arbor got an
opening goal from
Megan Wegener when she cleaned up a cross from Maegan
Smith in the 15th minute of play. The goal was Wegener's seventh of the
season.
Fifteen minutes later the two hooked up again when Smith got on the end
of Wegener's cross and knocked the ball home for her league leading 20th
goal of the season.
Just as the halftime horn sounded lightning appeared in the southern
Michigan sky, forcing a delay of around an hour and a half before play
could resume.
When the match finally resumed both teams battled until just after the
70th minute of play when lightning once again appeared in the sky,
halting the match for good. Since the match lasted over 70 minutes the
result stands as official.
The Cougars out-shot USF 14-4 through seventy minutes of play.
Spring Arbor moves to 15-2-1 and 8-1 in MCC loop play, while USF falls
to 8-10 overall. The two teams will lock horns again on Saturday in the
#1 vs. #8 matchup in the quarter finals of the MCC tournament. The
match will kick off at 2:00 p.m.
