Women's Soccer Drops MVNU 4-0

Maegan Smith knows her place on the Spring Arbor University women's soccer team.  The Cougars, which graduated six seniors who accounted for 41 of the team's 73 goals in 2010, would be looking for offensive production in 2011.  And Smith knew who was going to give it to them.

After spending the summer honing her game with the Buxmont Torch of the WPSL, Smith has returned to Spring Arbor's campus red-hot and has been scoring goals at a torrid pace since the Lady Cougar's kicked off the season on August 20th, her latest victim being Mount Vernon Nazarene University on Wednesday afternoon.

With temperatures in the mid 70's, the Cougars did not let a bumpy playing surface slow them down, as Megan Wegener hopped on a bobble by the MVNU goalkeeper in the fourth minute of play and poked home the eventual game winner.  The goal was Wegener's sixth of the season.

Smith took over from there, scoring first on a servce from Ashley DeNio in the 20th minute, and then again unassisted in the 31st minute.  Finally she capped off the scoring for the day on an assist from Karly Linton in the 63rd minute of play.  The hat trick was Smith's third of the 2011 season and brought her total for the year to 14, which leads the Mid Central Conference.  Smith has also dished out nine assists this fall, a total which also leads the MCC.

Brooklyn Morgan and Kelly Reszka combined to make one save for the Lady Cougars who have outscored MCC opponents 11-1 over three games of conference competition so far this season.

"I am so thankful for my teammates, they do a great job of finding me on the field," commented Smith.  "Our team works very hard for each other and it feels great to give the glory of our efforts to God."

The #11 Cougars currently sport a 10-1-1 overall record, which includes a 3-0 MCC mark.  They travel to Mishawaka, Indiana on Friday evening for their next conference tilt with Bethel College.  The game will kick off at 7:00 p.m.
