A summer full of playing soccer seems to have served Spring Arbor
University junior
Maegan Smith well. The Hickory Corners, Michigan native
scored a pair of headers in the first half and added a breakaway marker
in the second stanza to push her total to four tallies for the season.
Smith also had the lone Spring Arbor goal in the Cougar's season
opening 1-1 tie with NAIA #6 Lindsey Wilson College on Saturday. Smith,
who had 10 goals in 23 games for Spring Arbor last fall, spent the
summer playing in the WPSL for the Buxmont Torch.
Smith wasted little time in getting things rolling when she nodded home a
corner kick from the foot of fellow junior
Megan Wegener in the seventh
minute of play. Just four minutes later the 5'7" forward connected
with a service from
Cheyenne Martinez-Trevino from the left flank and
snapped a header to the near post to make things 2-0 in favor of the
visitors.
Wegener put the game out of reach when Smith threaded her through the
defense and put her in on a breakaway which Wegener tucked neatly into
the corner in the 37th minute.
Smith iced the game herself when Wegener found her with a diagonal ball
behind the CCU defense. Smith slotted home for her first college hat
trick, which took her 58 minutes of playing time to complete.
"I got some great services and fortunately got to finish on three of
them," commented Smith after the match. "It feels great to come into the
season early and be able to put some in for the team. Hopefully it
continues."
The Cougars owned the score sheet, ripping 33 shots in the contest while holding Cincinnati Christian to just three.
Spring Arbor will rest a few days before welcoming Trinity International
University on campus. The two teams will kick off at 5 p.m.
