SAU wins opener

The Spring Arbor Cougars began their fall campaign with a strong showing against conference rival Taylor University. The Cougars started strong, winning all 3 doubles matches. Thomas Calderone, in his debut as a Cougar, teamed with Aaron Mayes at #1 doubles for an 8-6 win over Wes Young and Jon Wegener. At the #2 doubles spot, David Darling and Rafael Schuster paired for a decisive 8-1 win. At #3 doubles, junior Nathan Scholten and freshman Michael Darling, former teammates at Western High School, teamed up for an 8-5 win to help the Cougars complete the doubles sweep. In singles action, David Darling made short work of Taylor's #1 player, Wes Young, winning 6-0, 6-1. At the #2 spot, Thomas Calderone, a junior transfer from Western Michigan University lost a tough 7-6, 7-6 battle to another NCAA Division I transfer from Ball State University, Jon Wegener. Good comeback wins by Aaron Mayes, Rafael Schuster, and Nathan Scholten, along with a straight set win by Andrew DeBruyn at #5 singles, completed the Cougars win.

SAU will next play at Marian University next Tuesday, September 6.
