Spring Arbor freshman
Olivia Clark made her first collegiate goal count, as she netted the game winner in a 3-1 Spring Arbor victory over visiting Cornerstone University on Wednesday.
Spring Arbor jumped out to a quick lead when
Maegan Smith found
Megan Wegener in the ninth minute the with a ball through the Golden Eagle defense. Wegener navigated the Cornerstone goalkeeper before slotting the ball into an open net to start the scoring.
Cornerstone's Riley Steen answered for the Golden Eagles in the 17th minute, converting on a counter attack with one of visitors five shots in the contest.
It was all Spring Arbor from that point forward, as the Clark roared back for the Cougars, taking a pass from sophomore
Karly Linton and beating the CU goalkeeper high to the right side of the net in the 20th minute.
Sophomore
Ashley DeNio capped off the scoring for SAU. DeNio collected a pass from Junior captain
Braydan Wiles and cut back on her defender before firing a shot over the top of Cornerstone's netminder for her first marker of the year.
Spring Arbor dominated the stat sheet, firing 27 shots in the contest compared to the five attempts launched by the Golden Eagles. Spring Arbor also enjoyed a 9-1 bulge in corner kicks.
"We weren't sharp with our finishing today," commented SAU head coach
Jason Crist. "I am not sure if it was the weather, or just the amount of games we have played in such a short stretch, but we need to be cleaner and take better care of our chances. I am hopeful that a week off from matches will help us to get healthy and back on track."
The Cougars (7-0-1) will remain idle until next Wednesday when they will close out their non-conference schedule by welcoming former WHAC rival Madonna University to campus. The match is scheduled for a 5:00 p.m. kickoff.
