SPRING ARBOR, MI - Head Coach Peggy Calderone has been watching the Lady Cougar tennis team improve each match this year and was hoping that the team would avenge last year's 5-4 loss at the hands of the Scots. Her team did not disappoint as SAU would win the match in convincing style 7-2 over Alma Thursday afternoon.
Starting with the doubles matches, the Cougars swept all three spots, 8-3, 8-3, 8-2 at one, two, and three respectively. Paige Fallu made her Cougar debut at #2 doubles and she and Quincy Banini would pair up and defeat Katie Meloche and local Western High School standout Meleah Benn 8-3.
"We haven't done that in a long time," said Calderone, referring to sweeping the doubles. "I am just so happy for these girls to come out and play the way they are playing."
Kristin DeBruyn won handily at #1 singles 6-3, 6-1, as did Jenna Bart at #3 singles. Hope Roelofs went three sets with Alma's #2 singles but would prevail 6-4, 3-6, 10-2.
Kelli Cross would fall at #5 singles, and Katie Storrer would play the match of the day at the #6 spot but would lose her match with a grueling third set thriller 6-2, 4-6, 11-13.
The win for the Cougars evened their record at 3-3 for the year while this was Alma's first time out this fall and would fall to 0-1.
Spring Arbor returns to action with a Crossroads League (CL) match on Tuesday, Sept. 18 at home against Huntington University at 2:30. The Foresters are also 3-3 on the season and 1-3 in the CL
