UPLAND, IN -- For the first time in eight years, the Spring
Arbor University women's tennis team has defeated the Taylor University
Trojans. The Lady Cougars downed Taylor
6-3 and according to SAU Coach Peggy Calderone was some of the best tennis she
has seen from her girls in a long time.
"We played so well and almost swept the doubles," said
Calderone. That's what I am really
impressed with is our doubles play. We've
improved a lot in that area, and each of these ladies have worked so hard."
Kristin DeBruyn and Hope Roelofs won their match at #1
doubles 8-5 and Quincy Banini and Paige Fallu captured a point at #2 doubles
8-4 and Katie Storrer and Jenna Bart almost made it a trifecta but wound up
losing in a tiebreaker 9-8 (7-5).
In singles play, DeBruyn, Roelofs, Banini, and Storrer all
picked up wins in straight sets.
The win was very important as it lifts Spring Arbor over
Taylor in the standings and for the all-important seeding process for the post
season League tournament. The Cougars
are now 5-3 overall and 4-3 in the CL while Taylor is 4-5 overall and 4-4 in
the Crossroads. Taylor's league action
is complete, while Spring Arbor will host Huntington on Saturday at 3:00.
