SPRING ARBOR,MI – The men's tennis team started the season with a perfect 9-0 win over Bethel College in front of a spirited home crowd on the campus of Spring Arbor University.
Matt Wojtkowski took over the #1 singles spot and won decidedly over Ethan Turner 6-1, 6-1 and later teamed up with Greenville College transfer, Andrew Herlein at #1 doubles to win there as well, 8-1.
John Hall won a grueling three-set super tie-break at #2 singles in the hot and humid weather. The two hour, forty five minute match fell Hall's way 6-0, 6-7, 11-9. Jesse DeBoer won at #3 singles 6-0, 6-3 and Herlein won his match 6-0, 7-6 (2). Michael Darling won at #5 singles 6-2, 6-3, and Andrew Fitzpatrick made it 6-0 for SAU in singles with a 6-2, 6-4 win at the #6 singles slot.
John Hall and Michael Darling won 8-5 at #2 doubles, and DeBoer and Aaron Laatsch picked up an 8-3 win at #3 doubles.
The Cougars start the season 1-0 while Bethel begins its Crossroads League campaign 0-1. The Cougars resume play on Saturday at home against Taylor University with play beginning at 12:30.
