FORT WAYNE, IN – The Men's tennis team broke a four match winless streak with a 5-4 decision over the University of St. Francis on Tuesday afternoon. With the Spring Arbor Cougars down 1-2, to the St. Francis Cougars, after doubles play, SAU enjoyed a come from behind victory winning four of the six singles matches to earn the win.
The doubles team of Jesse DeBoer and Aaron Laatsch took down Payten Selking and Tate Dishman 9-7 for the lone doubles point for Spring Arbor. John Hall (2 singles), DeBoer (3 singles), Drew Herlein (4 singles), and Andrew Fitzpatrick (6 singles) all rallied to win for the close 5-4 win for SAU.
The match of the day for Spring Arbor came at #4 singles where Drew Herlein came from behind in his match after dropping the first set 4-6 to win the second and third sets 6-2, 7-5 for a huge point in the competition.
The win, which clinched a spot in the post-season League Tournament, lifts Spring Arbor to 3-4 and into a tie for fifth place in the Crossroads League standings with Goshen College. The Cougars will play their last regular season match at home on Thursday afternoon with Indiana Wesleyan at 4:00.
