SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – Freshman Aubrey Schierbeek scored less than eight minutes into the match and the 10th ranked Spring Arbor University women's soccer team never looked back in a 5-0 thrashing of Marian University on Tuesday night.
The shutout was the ninth of the season, and the fifth in the last six matches, for the Cougars, who improved to 12-1-1 overall and 6-0 in the Crossroads League. Meanwhile, the Knights slipped to 8-4-1 on the year and 4-2 in conference play.
The Cougars were all over the visitors from the opening whistle and were rewarded for their early pressure when Schierbeek found the back of the net just 7:47 into the contest. Junior Kristina Sobel jumped on a loose ball in the attacking third and lofted a cross into the box where Schierbeek headed it to the far post past the MU goalkeeper.
Spring Arbor continued to mount chances, but the Knights settled in and managed to keep the deficit at one right up until halftime. However, in the 40th minute, the reigning Crossroads League Offensive Player of the Week Corrie Good struck for the fifth time in the last three matches. After a cross from Renee Broekhuizen was blocked by a Knight defender, a scramble ensued to clear the ball, but it found the foot of Good at the top of the 18-yard box and the sophomore blasted a shot into the upper corner of the goal to put the Cougars up 2-0 heading into the break.
In the second half, the Cougars would put the match out of reach with three goals in a 10-minute span beginning with a strike from freshman Ashley Wroblewski in the 60th minute. Wroblewski collected the ball after a Marian turnover deep in their own third and ripped a low shot to the far post from 20 yards out for the first goal of her collegiate career. The home team would tack on two more goals from sophomore Alyssa Joseph and freshman Jacquelyn Martin for the eventual 5-0 victory.
Schierbeek ended the night with a team-high six shots while Good, Shannon Balcer and Nikki Bonnema all added three apiece. Junior goalkeeper Sarah Yancer stopped the only shot she faced.
The Cougars outshot Marian 26-7 and owned a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Up next, Spring Arbor will host Taylor University on Saturday, Oct. 18 beginning at 7 p.m.
