UPLAND, Ind. – The Spring Arbor University men's soccer team suffered its first Crossroads League loss of the season falling at Taylor University 4-1 on Saturday night.
The loss drops the Cougars to 10-2-4 on the year and 3-1-3 in the conference while the second-place Trojans improved to 11-4 overall and 6-1 in league play.
Taylor jumped on top of the Cougars quickly, netting the first goal just over 10 minutes into the match. Goalkeeper Billy Irvine saved the first shot attempt by Lewis Nisbet, but Sam Hardy was right there to clean up the rebound and put the Trojans up 1-0. In the 23rd minute, the home team would double its lead with a close range goal from Nisbet.
However, the Cougars cut the deficit in half in before halftime. In the 32nd minute, Jared Putt forced a turnover and drew a foul inside the box, creating a penalty kick opportunity for SAU. Junior Stevenson Storm stepped up and buried the attempt to make it a 2-1 game.
Spring Arbor would come out of the break and create a several opportunities to level the match, but were unable to cash in.
In the 82nd minute, Taylor would seal the match with a PK of their own. The Trojans tacked on another score in the 85th minute to claim the 4-1 win.
Storm finished the match with three shots while Michael Caccavo added two. Irvine made eight saves on the night.
Up next, the Cougars will return home to host No. 11 Indiana Wesleyan University on Wednesday, Oct. 22 beginning at 7 p.m.
