SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – Despite outshooting the visiting Maple Leafs 30-3, the Spring Arbor University men's soccer team had to settle for a 1-1 draw with Goshen College on Wednesday night.
Goshen (6-4-1, 1-0-1 Crossroads League) had only one shot through the first 90 minutes, but they made it count, capitalizing on a quick counter-attack in the 17th minute to take an early lead.
The Cougars nearly leveled the match in the 32nd minute when Jake Sterling's corner kick was tipped off the crossbar by the GC keeper. The rebound went directly to Stevenson Storm, whose shot was headed off the goal line by a defender to keep SAU off the scoreboard.
However, just moments later, SAU was able to breakthrough for the equalizer when Sean Cook's cross found the feet of Adam Hunt, who beat the keeper for his first goal of the season.
The Cougars continued to mount chances in the second half on Goshen, but the solid work of goalkeeper Dean Nafziger kept the Maple Leafs alive, including a pair of exceptional saves on shots from Jared Putt, to force overtime and the eventual draw.
In addition to the substantial shot advantage, the Cougars owned a 6-1 edge in corner kicks.
Spring Arbor (8-1-2, 1-0-1 Crossroads League) will visit Mount Vernon Nazarene University (7-3-1, 2-0-0 Crossroads League) on Saturday, Oct. 4 in a 4 p.m. matchup.
