Caccavo Scores Twice Late to Lift SAU Past Saint Francis

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Just minutes after netting the game-tying goal in the closing seconds of regulation, sophomore Michael Caccavo scored the golden goal to lift the Spring Arbor University men's soccer team to a 2-1 overtime victory over the University of Saint Francis on Saturday.

The win pushed the Cougars 11-3-4 overall and 4-2-3 in the conference, putting them in fourth place in the standings, while Saint Francis fell to 8-9 and 2-7 in league play.

The Cougars, who needed a win to host the upcoming Crossroads League Tournament quarterfinal matchup, found themselves trailing less than 16 minutes into the contest. At the 15:54 mark, USF's Austin Schermerhorn fired a shot from beyond the 18-yard box that found the top left corner, and the home team would take that lead into halftime.

Spring Arbor created several chances throughout the second half, but were unable to find the equalizer until the final minute of regulation. With just 47 seconds remaining on the clock, junior Stevenson Storm beat his defender and found Caccavo, who slipped a shot past the USF goalkeeper to force overtime.

The Cougars wasted little time in the extra session as Caccavo found the back of the net again in the 93rd minute to send SAU to the 2-1 win.

Storm finished the match with two assists while senior goalkeeper Billy Irvine made seven saves.

Spring Arbor will host Grace College (9-6-1, 4-4-1 Crossroads League) in the Crossroads League Tournament quarterfinals on Saturday, Nov. 1.
