WINONA LAKE, Ind. – The 10th ranked Spring Arbor University women's soccer team completed one of its most dramatic wins of the season Wednesday night, returning from a 1-0 first half deficit to defeat Grace College 2-1 in overtime.
The two sides entered the night tied at the top of the Crossroads League standings, but sophomore Corrie Good's golden goal in the extra session gave the Cougars sole possession of first place and the inside track on the postseason.
Grace (7-3-2, 3-1-0 Crossroads League), who is receiving votes in the NAIA Top 25 poll, came storming out of the gates looking for the upset and dominated through the first 20 minutes of action. At the 27:00 mark, the Lancers would get on the scoreboard with a goal from Kaitlan Wiles. The goal was the first surrendered by SAU since Sept. 22 against Westminster College, and was the first time the Cougars have trailed since Sept. 12 against the University of Mobile.
Spring Arbor would settle in, though, and begin taking over the match. After halftime, the Cougars outshot the home team 6-3 and owned a 4-0 edge in corner kicks, but still found themselves trailing late in the match. The hard work finally paid off, however, when freshman Renee Broekhuizen scored the equalizer in the 82nd minute. Junior Nikki Bonnema's cross to the back post found Broekhuizen, who tapped in the game-tying goal to force overtime.
Shortly in to the overtime period, the Cougars forced a Grace turnover, and Good capitalized on the opportunity by blasting a shot far post past the Lancer goalkeeper to polish off the come from behind victory.
Up next, Spring Arbor (10-1-1, 4-0-0 Crossroads League) will travel to Bethel College on Saturday, Oct. 11 in a 6 p.m. matchup.
