Cougar Tennis defeats St. Francis 7-2

FORT WAYNE, IN – The Men's Tennis team won its third match in a row and fourth of the last five on Saturday, the latest, a 7-2 victory against the University of St. Francis in Fort Wayne, IN.  The two Crossroads League (CL) teams met for a non-conference battle with the Cougars of St. Francis looking for revenge of Spring Arbor's 5-4 win on September 24, 2013 in a CL match.

John Hall (2S 6-1, 6-0), Jesse DeBoer (3S 6-2, 6-4), Drew Herlein (4S 3-6, 6-4, 6-0), Michael Darling (5S 6-3, 6-3), and Andrew Fitzpatrick (6S 7-5, 6-4) picked up the five wins in singles and the doubles matches fell 2-1 to Spring Arbor with Matt Wojtkowski and DeBoer winning 8-4 at #1 Doubles, and Hall and Aaron Laatsch winning 8-6 at #3 doubles.

One of the positions in tennis that a lot of people don't understand is the #1 singles spot.  At the collegiate level, the person that plays the #1 spot can be someone you could see play on the ATP Tour someday.  Not likely, but possible.

The lone senior on the Cougar squad, Matt Wojtkowski, has filled that role with a lot of class and has to face the best player the other school has to offer, and often it is a player from outside the country.  'Woj' has represented Spring Arbor University and the tennis program well and his skill set on the court is not represented by the record he may end up with in the #1 spot.

SAU is now 7-11 for the season and will finish the year with three final home matches, starting with Trine University on April 14th at 4:00.
