GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Spring Arbor University men's soccer team extended its winning streak, and shutout streak, with a 1-0 overtime victory over Cornerstone University on Wednesday night.
Sophomore Michael Caccavo scored for the third consecutive match to lift the Cougars to their sixth straight win, while senior goalkeeper Billy Irvine and the SAU defense played extremely well to record a clean sheet for the fourth time this season.
"We are really pleased with the character these guys display even when the game doesn't fall into place like we would like," said head coach Nathan Miller. "They just kept fighting to find a way."
After a scoreless 90 minutes, in which neither side was able to generate quality scoring chances in the rainy weather conditions, the Cougars wasted little time in the overtime period. Five minutes into the extra session, senior Brendan Bell cut through the midfield on the dribble, and fed a through ball to freshman Austin Rahman running to the corner. Rahman then looped a great cross far post where Caccavo rushed in and, in a big crowd, punched it home on the volley.
The Cougars held a slim 9-8 edge in shots while earning seven corner kicks to the Golden Eagles' two.
"We need to get used to teams being physical and breaking play up. We will get better at establishing our tempo and executing in the final third. Clutch teams work at the details relentlessly, and this team is doing that every day."
Up next, Spring Arbor (6-0) returns home to Indiana Tech (1-0-1) on Saturday, Sept. 13 at 7 p.m.
