GOSHEN, Ind. – The Spring Arbor University women's soccer team traveled to Goshen College on Tuesday night and didn't miss a beat playing on natural grass as five different players scored in a 5-0 rout of the Maple Leafs.
It was the fourth straight win for the 12th ranked Cougars, who improved to 8-1-1 on the year and 2-0-0 in the conference. The loss dropped Goshen to 3-8-0 and 0-2-0 in league play.
Freshman Aubrey Schierbeek started the scoring early for SAU, finding the back of the net less than three minutes into the match. After receiving the corner kick from Becca Lynn, Schierbeek chipped her shot over the keeper's head to put the Cougars on top 1-0.
Spring Arbor will add one more goal in the first half when fellow freshman Sarah Klunder finished off a cross Schierbeek in the 33rd minute.
The Cougars put the match out of reach shortly after halftime, scoring twice in just over seven minutes. Junior Shannon Balcer, who was coming off a two goal performance against Huntington University, struck for her team-leading sixth goal of the season in the 50th minute, and sophomore Corrie Good followed it up with a score in the 53rd minute. Freshman Abbey Fuller would tally the final goal of the night in the 83rd minute.
Schierbeek finished the match with a goal and two assists. Good, Lynn and Alyssa Joseph also recorded assists while junior goalkeeper Sarah Yancer registered two saves.
The Cougars outshot the Maple Leafs 24-4 and held a 9-0 advantage in corner kicks.
Spring Arbor returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 4 when it hosts No. 20 Mount Vernon Nazarene University (9-1-1, 2-0-0 Crossroads League) in a 7 p.m. matchup.
