SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – Senior Stevenson Storm and freshman Janum Sailor both found the back of the net as the Spring Arbor University men's soccer team blanked Taylor University 2-0 on Saturday night.
The win was the third straight for the Cougars, who improved to 9-5-2 on the season and 4-2-1 in the Crossroads League. Meanwhile, the Trojans slipped to 3-10-2 with a 1-5-1 mark in league play.
Junior goalkeeper Abe Bonn posted five saves, including a pair of diving stops, to record his first career win and clean sheet.
Storm put the Cougars on top early scoring his third goal of the season in the eighth minute. Spring Arbor was awarded a free kick just outside the 18-yard box and junior Adam Hunt fed freshman Morris Kamara, who snuck a pass through to Storm. Storm would shake one defender and blast a shot past the TU netminder.
Taylor nearly evened the score midway through the second half but Bonn would make a leaping save, punching the ball just over the crossbar to preserve the lead.
Just moments later, the Cougars would capitalize on another free kick to put the game away. From the right wing, sophomore Jake Sterling served a perfect ball in front of the goal mouth and Sailor headed home for his third marker of the season.
Spring Arbor amassed 22 shots while limiting Taylor to only eight. The Cougars also held a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks.
"This was a very good team win," said head coach Nathan Miller. "Taylor always plays with a lot of emotion against us. They took it to us a year ago and our guys have never forgotten that night."
"We were really sharp from our goalkeeping to our set plays," added Miller. "It was a fun night. I loved how we finished the match, just stayed under control and saw the game out with great possession and tempo. The guys are always stepping up for each other and we are improving every day."
Spring Arbor will travel to Indiana Wesleyan University (11-4-0, 6-1-0 CL) on Wednesday, Oct. 21 before returning home to close out the regular season against the University of Saint Francis (Ind.) (0-14-1, 0-6-1 CL) on Saturday, Oct. 24.
