SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – The Spring Arbor University women's basketball team never trailed in a 60-44 victory over visiting Rochester College on Saturday at the SAU Fieldhouse.
The win was the second straight for the Cougars, who improved to 7-6 overall, while the Warriors fell to 7-6 on the season.
Spring Arbor started fast opening up a 9-2 advantage less than four minutes into the game. The Cougars would eventually push the lead to double digits, 25-15, at the 6:48 mark of the second quarter, but the Warriors would not go down without a fight. The visitors outscored SAU 7-1 over the next two minutes to close the gap to four, and would trail by four at halftime, 31-27.
Rochester continued to battle and got within three, 35-32, early in the third quarter. However, the Spring Arbor defense would hold the Warriors scoreless for nearly the final eight minutes of the period, allowing the offense to put the game out of reach with a 13-0 run.
The Cougars struggled from the field shooting just 31 percent (20-for-64), but played outstanding on the defensive end forcing the Warriors into 24 turnovers, resulting in 27 points for SAU.
Junior Rachel Driesenga finished 13 points and 13 rebounds to lead the way for the Cougars. Driesenga has now posted back-to-back double-doubles, and has accomplished the feat in three of her last four games.
Fellow junior Kylie Townsley recorded 11 points and seven rebounds while sophomore Autumn Goggin netted nine points and seven boards. Sophomore Faith Johnson chipped in seven points with three assists and two steals.
Spring Arbor will wrap up the calendar year at the Bluffton University Holiday Tournament on Dec. 28-29. The Cougars will open the tournament against Geneva College (5-3) on Monday, Dec. 28 at 5 p.m.
