BLUFFTON, Ohio – The Spring Arbor University women's basketball team picked up its third straight win as it cruised past Geneva College 81-56 in the Bluffton University Holiday Tournament on Monday.
The Cougars never trailed as they improved their record to 8-6 on the season while the Golden Tornadoes dropped to 5-4 overall.
Spring Arbor will play host Bluffton University in the tournament championship game tomorrow at 5 p.m. Geneva will take the floor against Ohio State University-Lima in the consolation game at 12 p.m.
A 12-3 first quarter run, propelled SAU to a 19-11 advantage at the end of the period. The Cougars continued to ride the momentum, and pushed their lead to double digits midway through the second quarter and would never look back.
Spring Arbor shot 42 percent (28-for-66) from the field while limiting Geneva to 35 percent (18-for-52). The Cougars dominated the glass – 50-32 – including 15 offensive rebounds which helped lead to a 42-22 advantage in points in the paint.
Junior Aimee Konkel led all scorers with a season-high 16 points as she knocked down four three-pointers. Fellow junior Rachel Driesenga hauled in a career-best 17 rebounds to go along with 10 points to record her third consecutive double-double.
Junior Kylie Townsley continues her march toward 1,000 points as she added 12 for the Cougars giving her 964 for her career. Sophomore Autumn Goggin also chipped in 12 points, six rebounds and three assists.
"This was a nice way to come back from break," said head coach Ryan Frost. "We got balanced scoring and defended the ball well. It was also great to see Aimee have a nice shooting night. Hopefully that will carry over the rest of the way."
Following its tilt with Bluffton, Spring Arbor will open the 2016 calendar year by hosting Crossroads League rival Grace College on Saturday, Jan. 2 at 1 p.m.
