Women's Basketball falls to Bluffton in tournament championship game

BLUFFTON, Ohio – Junior Kylie Townsley matched her season-high with 21 points but the Spring Arbor University women's basketball team fell to Bluffton University 82-65 in the championship game of the Bluffton Holiday Tournament on Tuesday.

The loss snapped a three game winning streak as the Cougars dipped to 8-7 overall while the Beavers remained unbeaten and improved to a perfect 10-0 on the season.

Townsley scored the first four points for SAU, pushing the Cougars out to a 4-2 lead. However, Bluffton countered with an 11-0 run to grab a nine point advantage that propelled the Beavers to a 22-13 lead after the first quarter.

Bluffton led by as many as 17 in the second quarter, but Spring Arbor clawed its way back narrowing the deficit to eight, 36-28, with nine unanswered points. The Beavers would convert a pair of free throws in the closing seconds of the period though to take a 38-28 lead into halftime.

The hosts would maintain their double-digit advantage throughout most of the third quarter before pulling away late in the fourth.

Spring Arbor finished shooting 38 percent (26-for-68) from the floor while Bluffton connected on 44 percent (27-for-62) of its attempts. The Beavers went to the free throw line 37 times, converting on 25 of the opportunities. The Cougars were limited to just 15 trips to the charity stripe.

Townsley poured in a game-high 21 points on 9-for-18 shooting. She also posted seven rebounds, four steals and two assists. Sophomore Faith Johnson followed with a season-high 16 points. Junior Aimee Konkel and freshman Kristina Grace chipped in six points apiece. Junior Rachel Driesenga ripped down a team-high eight rebounds while senior Jessica Mabry dished out six assists.

Townsley and Driesenga were named to the All-Tournament Team. In two games, Townsley totaled 33 points and 11 rebounds while Driesenga racked up 14 points and 25 boards.

Spring Arbor will return home to host Crossroads League rival Grace College (5-10, 0-3 CL) on Saturday, Jan. 2 at 1 p.m.
