SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – Junior guard Kylie Townsley became the 20th player in Spring Arbor University women's basketball history to score 1,000 points in a career as the Cougars defeated Grace College 68-51 in a Crossroads League game on Saturday.
Townsley finished the game against the Lancers (5-11, 0-4 CL) with a game-high 19 points and now has 1,004 career points in less than three seasons as a Cougar. She shot 8-for-15 from the field and was a perfect 3-for-3 from the free throw line. Townsley also added a team-leading five assists and two steals.
"So happy for Kylie scoring her 1,000th point today," said head coach Ryan Frost. "She has worked so hard over the past two and a half years, and is a lot of fun to coach."
Needing 15 points at the beginning of the day to eclipse the milestone, Townsley did most of the work in the first two quarters of play. She scored 13 first half points, including nine during a 12-0 second period run, to help give SAU a 33-27 lead at the break.
Spring Arbor came out of the intermission on fire hitting seven of its first eight shots to grab a 50-32 lead and break the game wide open. Back-to-back buckets from Ryann Laier and Rachel Driesenga early in the fourth quarter gave the Cougars their largest lead of the game, 64-39, as the team cruised to its first conference win of the season.
The Spring Arbor defense shut down Grace in the second half, holding the Lancers to just 28 percent (10-for-35) shooting. The Cougars connected on eight three-pointers, matching the second-most in a single game this season.
Sophomore Autumn Goggin finished with nine points while junior Aimee Konkel and sophomore Faith Johnson chipped in eight apiece. Driesenga hauled in a game-high 11 rebounds to go along with her four points.
"We had great balanced effort on both ends of the floor today," added Frost. "It was great to see us shoot well from the outside."
Up next, Spring Arbor (9-7, 1-3 CL) will travel to Taylor University (11-5, 2-2 CL) on Wednesday, Jan. 6 before returning home to host No. 7 Marian University (13-3, 4-0 CL) on Saturday, Jan. 9 at 1 p.m.
