NOTRE DAME, Ind. – A cold shooting performance hampered the Spring Arbor University women's basketball team leading to a 61-45 setback on the road against Holy Cross College in non-conference action on Tuesday night.
Spring Arbor shot 25 percent (15-for-61) from the floor, including just 1-for-14 from behind the arc, while Holy Cross (4-8) connected on 39 percent (23-for-59) of its attempts with eight three-pointers.
The Saints jumped out to a 13-2 lead to begin the game but the Cougars slowly chipped away. Trailing 22-15 at the 4:10 mark in the second quarter, SAU used a 6-1 run to close the gap to two with less than a minute to play in the period. However, the home team would halt the run with a jumper just before the buzzer to grab a 25-21 advantage at halftime.
The third quarter would prove to be the decisive period. The two teams went back and forth early in the frame until Holy Cross netted eight unanswered points and stretched the margin to double digits. The Cougars responded with a three-pointer from Goggin to get within eight, 36-28, but HCC ended the quarter on another 8-0 run, and would hang on for the win.
Junior Kylie Townsley paced the Cougars with 14 points and six rebounds. Freshman Rachel Nelson finished with nine points and six boards while sophomore Autumn Goggin chipped in seven points.
Spring Arbor (5-6) will return home to host Indiana University East (4-3) on Saturday, Dec. 12 at 1 p.m.
