Men's Basketball falls to third straight nationally ranked opponent

SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – The Spring Arbor University men's basketball team dropped its third straight game to a nationally ranked opponent on Saturday, falling to No. 13 Bethel College 71-55.

Freshman Tommy Hamilton paced the Cougars with a season-high 12 points while junior Thomas Starks followed with 11 points and eight rebounds. Sophomore Zach Medendorp registered his first career double-double netting 10 points and hauling in 10 boards.

Bethel (15-4, 5-3 CL) held a slim 10-7 lead just over five minutes into the contest, but BC's Luke Fisher, a 6-foot-8 freshman, scored six straight points to give the Pilots a nine point advantage. Fisher would go on to score 17 points – on 8-of-10 shooting – in the first half to propel the visitors to a 39-27 halftime lead.

The Pilots pushed their lead to 18, 48-30, early in the second stanza, but the Cougars would begin to claw their way back. Trailing 52-36, senior Greg Hamilton sank a pair of free throws, and fellow senior Peter Barry hit back-to-back shots, to get SAU within 10 with 8:20 remaining.  However, Bethel answered Spring Arbor's 6-0 run with a 10-1 scoring spurt to regain control.

The Cougars made one last push getting consecutive triples from Hamilton and Starks to close the gap to 11, 62-51, with 5:00 to play. But, once again, the Pilots would respond scoring seven straight points to put the game out of reach.

Fisher led all scorers with 24 points while Clay Yeo chipped in 16 more for the Pilots.

Bethel, which ranks third in the nation in field goal percentage, connected on 50 percent (28-for-56) of its attempts while Spring Arbor shot just 30 percent (18-for-61). The Pilots also out-rebounded the Cougars 39-38.

Spring Arbor (6-14, 0-8 CL) will prepare for back-to-back road games against Huntington University (10-10, 4-4 CL) on Tuesday, Jan. 19 and Mount Vernon Nazarene University (10-10, 2-6 CL) on Saturday, Jan. 23.
