Cougars can't slow down Huntington

HUNTINGTON, Ind. – The hot-shooting Huntington University Foresters downed the Spring Arbor University men's basketball team 90-60 on Tuesday night at Platt Arena.

Huntington (11-10, 5-4 CL) shot over 57 percent (36-for-63) for the game while knocking down 10 three-pointers. Daniel Woll, one of the top scorers in the Crossroads League, led the Foresters with 23 points on 10-for-14 shooting.

Woll connected on his first four field goal attempts to help push the Foresters out to an early 12-6 lead. Following a triple from Derek Hinen, HU increased its lead to nine, but SAU would respond immediately. Junior Caleb Hogans hit a jumper on the ensuing possession before converting an old-fashioned three-point play the next time down the floor. With 11:00 to play in the half, sophomore Zach Medendorp would cap a 12-3 run with a pair of free throws to get the Cougars within three, 18-15.

After trading baskets for the next six minutes, Huntington was able to string together three straight defensive stops and capitalized on the offensive end to grab a double digit lead. The Foresters would add a three-pointer just before the buzzer to take a 44-30 advantage into halftime.

Spring Arbor was able to trim the deficit to 13 early in the second half, but a quick 7-0 run by HU gave the home team an insurmountable lead.

The Cougars were limited to 42 percent (25-for-60) shooting on the night, and were out-rebounded 37-25.

Hogans paced SAU with 17 points while also adding four steals, three rebounds and three assists. Senior Greg Hamilton followed with 13 points and four boards, and Medendorp chipped in 10 points with three blocks. Junior Thomas Starks finished with six points and five rebounds while senior Peter Barry and freshman Tommy Hamilton also added six points apiece.

Spring Arbor (6-15, 0-9 CL) will visit Mount Vernon Nazarene University (10-11, 2-7 CL) on Saturday, Jan. 23 before returning home to host Goshen College (12-9, 4-5 CL) in the Coaches vs. Cancer Suits and Sneakers game on Tuesday, Jan. 26 at 7 p.m.
