UPLAND, Ind. – The Spring Arbor University women's basketball team fell to Taylor University 79-54 Wednesday night at Odle Arena.
The loss dropped the Cougars to 9-8 overall and 1-4 in the Crossroads League while the Trojans picked up their sixth straight win to improve to 12-5 on the season with a 3-2 mark in league play.
After a slow start by both teams to begin the game, Taylor began to heat up. Leading 9-6 midway through the first quarter, the Trojans closed the period hitting seven of their next eight shots, including three three-pointers, to grab a 26-10 advantage.
The home team continued its torrid shooting in the second quarter as they boosted their lead to 19 points, 35-16. However, junior Aimee Konkel fueled a 10-2 run with a pair of three's before halftime to close the gap to eight, 39-31, at the break.
The intermission gave Taylor time to regroup, however, and TU would answer SAU's run with a lengthy one of their own. The Trojans outscored the Cougars 12-2 to open the third quarter, ballooning their advantage to 18, and would never look back.
Taylor finished the night shooting 53 percent (31-for-58) from the floor, including 11-for-20 from behind the arc, while limiting Spring Arbor to just 36 percent (22-for-61). The Trojans also hauled in 40 rebounds compared to SAU's 26.
Junior Kylie Townsley and Konkel paced the Cougars with 12 points apiece. Townsley grabbed a team-high six boards while Konkel matched her season-high with four three-pointers. Sophomore Faith Johnson and freshman Alex Forster also chipped in six points apiece.
Up next, Spring Arbor will host No. 3 Marian University (14-3, 5-0 CL) on Saturday, Jan. 9 at 1 p.m.
