Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Late scoring drought costs SAU in loss to Goshen

SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – The Spring Arbor University men's basketball team went nearly five minutes without a field goal late in the second half allowing Goshen College to pull away with an 89-79 victory on Tuesday night.

Junior Caleb Hogans netted a game-high 24 points with five rebounds and four assists to pace the Cougars. Sophomore Zach Medendorp and senior Greg Hamilton also scored in double figures. Medendorp finished with 13 points and Hamilton followed with 12 while also adding seven rebounds and six steals.

The first 10 minutes of the contest was a see-saw battle featuring four lead changes with no team leading by more than four points. With the score tied 22-22 midway through the period, freshman Tommy Hamilton hit a driving lay-up to spark a 16-3 run for Spring Arbor. Goshen (13-10, 5-6 CL) would battle back, though, and trim the deficit to seven, 40-33, at halftime.

Early in the second half, the Maple Leafs continued to claw their back, but the Cougars showed poise and answered each run by the visitors. Trailing 48-40, the Leafs scored six straight points to get within two, but back-to-back buckets from Hogans and Hamilton helped SAU push the lead back to seven, 58-51, with 12:05 remaining.

Goshen was finally able to breakthrough, however, and after tying the score 60-60 at the 7:58 mark, the Maple Leafs would hold Spring Arbor scoreless from the field for nearly five minutes while scoring 15 unanswered points to put the game out of reach.

Goshen shot 56 percent (28-for-50) on the night, including 68 percent (17-for-25) in the second half where the Maple Leafs also connected on six three-pointers, while Spring Arbor finished shooting at a 47 percent (32-for-68) clip. The visitors held a 38-27 advantage on the glass, but SAU dominated the paint outscoring GC 54-28 down low.

Tommy Hamilton and Anthony Qasawa chipped in eight points apiece while Peter Barry added seven with three rebounds.

Spring Arbor (6-17, 0-11 CL) will travel to Marion, Indiana on Saturday, Jan. 30 to take on No. 5 Indiana Wesleyan University (20-3, 8-3 CL) beginning at 3 p.m.
