#3 Marian pulls away late from Women's Basketball

SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – The Spring Arbor University women's basketball team closed a 12-point deficit to just three late in the third quarter against No. 3-ranked Marian University on Saturday. However, the Knights ended the game on an 18-5 run to defeat the Cougars 48-32.

Spring Arbor limited Marian (15-3, 6-0 CL) – one of the nation's top scoring and shooting teams – to its lowest scoring total of the season, but was unable to get enough offense to pull off the upset as the Knights held on for their seventh consecutive win.

Junior Rachel Driesenga ripped down a career-best 18 rebounds and posted a team-high eight points to pace the Cougars. Fellow junior Kylie Townsley chipped in six points, two steals and two blocks while junior Aimee Konkel and sophomore Faith Johnson finished with five points apiece.

Facing the double-digit deficit in the second quarter, Spring Arbor narrowed the gap to six after getting buckets from Johnson and senior Jessica Mabry, as well as a pair of free throws from Driesenga. Marian answered, though, and took a 30-21 advantage into halftime.

The Cougar defense locked down the Knights to begin the second half, holding the visitors scoreless for nearly seven minutes in the third quarter. The SAU offense capitalized on MU's drought scoring six consecutive points to pull within three, 30-27.

Marian proved worthy of its ranking, however, and, despite its struggles against the tenacious SAU defense, ended the period on a 7-2 run to regain control of the game. The Knights would go on to outscore the Cougars 11-3 in the fourth quarter to remain perfect in the Crossroads League.

Both teams had trouble finding their shooting strokes as Marian connected on 31 percent (18-for-57) of its attempts while Spring Arbor finished shooting 20 percent (12-for-61) from the field. The two teams combined to go just 3-for-30 from three-point range.

Spring Arbor (9-9, 1-5 CL) will look to bounce back when it visits the University of Saint Francis (Ind.) (7-8, 3-3 CL) on Wednesday, Jan. 13 in a 7 p.m. tip.
