Win over Grace highlights Day 1 of Big Guns Classic for Volleyball

JOLIET, Ill. – After dropping its opening match to the University of Saint Francis (Ill.), the Spring Arbor University volleyball team responded with a hard-fought, five-set win over Grace College to close the first day of action at the USF Big Guns Classic.

 
 

MATCH 1

LOCATION: Pat Sullivan Center | Joliet, Ill.

RECORDS: Spring Arbor 3-16, Saint Francis (Ill.) 18-8

 
 

MATCH BREAKDOWN

  • SET SCORES: 25-22, 25-14, 25-20
  • Saint Francis, which entered the match having won nine of its previous 10 contests, grabbed the early advantage with a narrow 25-22 victory in set one. The Saints would take control of the match with a 25-14 win in the second frame on their way to the sweep.
  • Rebekah Kujat racked up 10 kills to pace the Cougars. Courtney Kyser ended the match with six while Alyssa Walker added five. Annica Stotz finished with 22 assists.
  • Leading the defense was Leah Rose and Taylor Johnston. Rose picked up 19 digs while Johnston collected 11. Kyser and Maggie Watson made a big impact at the net, recording five and four blocks, respectively.

 
 

FOR SAINT FRANCIS (ILL.)

  • The Fighting Saints saw two players finish with double-digit kills. Alyssa Bridleman powered USF with a match-high 13 kills while Jessica Karalow followed with 10.
  • Setters Amber Casey and Danielle Conrad handed out 17 assists apiece.
  • Defensively, Leah Alles paced Saint Francis with 21 digs while Bridleman totaled four blocks.

LOCATION: Pat Sullivan Center | Joliet, Ill.

RECORDS: Spring Arbor 4-16, Grace 11-13

 
 

MATCH BREAKDOWN

  • SET SCORES: 25-18, 25-23, 14-25, 24-26, 15-9
  • Spring Arbor jumped out to a two-sets-to-none lead, but Grace fought back, winning the next two, including a tightly contested 26-24 set.
  • In the decisive fifth set, the Cougars pulled away late to earn the victory.
  • Kujat finished with a match-high 16 kills to lead SAU. Kyser followed with nine and Walker chipped in eight. Stotz finished with 37 assists and Gabrielle Hilliard recorded three aces.
  • Defensively, Rose collected 31 digs and Johnston tallied 10. The Cougars totaled 14 blocks, led by eight from Kyser.

 
 

FOR GRACE

  • The Lancers had three players finish with double figure kills. Kelsee Zuidema had 15 while Savannah Hart had 14 and Kaitlin Kerrigan had 13.
  • GC setter Taylor Baird handed out 46 assists.
  • Caylie Teel led the defensive effort with 25 digs.

 
 

 
 

UP NEXT

Spring Arbor will return to action Saturday for the final day of the USF Big Guns Classic. The Cougars will take on Olivet Nazarene University (17-10) at 10 a.m. followed with a match against Trinity Christian College (15-13) at 2 p.m.
