THE BASICS

FINAL SCORE: Spring Arbor 66, Aquinas 74

LOCATION: Mol Arena | Grand Rapids, Mich.

RECORDS: Spring Arbor 1-1, Aquinas 1-1

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Fresh off a big upset victory over the No. 8 ranked Cornerstone University Golden Eagles, the Cougars took a 30-29 into halftime thanks to a basket at the buzzer by junior Drew Zuidema.
  • However, the Saints came out firing as Jeremy Williamson hit four straight 3-pointers to put Aquinas on top 43-38 with 15:50 to play.
  • Marandet hit the second of his two 3-pointers with 10 minutes remaining to bring the Cougars back within one, and Tommy Hamilton would follow with back-to-back triples to give SAU a 58-55 edge at the 8:03 mark.
  • A 9-1 run by Aquinas, however, would give the Saints a lead that they would not surrender.
  • Senior Thomas Starks followed up his big night against Cornerstone with 11 points and five rebounds, and senior Xavier Prather crashed the boards and pulled down a career-high 12 rebounds.
  • Spring Arbor closed the night shooting 42 percent (24-for-57) from the field and a strong 41 percent (7-for-17) from three-point range. Despite the loss, SAU held the edge on the glass as it out-rebounded Aquinas 42-35.
  • The Saints shot almost identical shooting 43 percent (26-for-60) on the night and 42 percent (8-for-19) from long range.

FOR THE SAINTS

  • Jeremy Williamson led Aquinas with 15 points, all coming from beyond the arc.
  • Two other Saints finished in double-digits. Jake Bullock finished with 15 points, one block and two rebounds, and Ryan Shall went a perfect 4-for-4 from the field and 3-for-4 from the charity stripe for a total of 12 points.
