HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Autumn Goggin and Rachel Nelson helped Spring Arbor get out to a quick 5-0 lead, but Indiana Kokomo responded with eight unanswered points. The host Cougars would not trail again in the half, and take a three point lead, 27-22, into halftime.
  • SAU struggled from the field in the first half, hitting just 28 percent (6-for-21) of its shots, but the Cougars would begin to heat up.
  • Trailing by five early in the third quarter, the Cougars used a 7-0 run to grab their first lead since the game's opening minutes. Back-to-back layups by Karly Bender and Lindsey Lehman trimmed the deficit to one, and Aimee Konkel capped the scoring spurt with a three-pointer to put SAU on top 33-31. Indiana Kokomo would come back to tie the score late in the period, but Spring Arbor regained the lead on a bucket from Townsley just before the buzzer.
  • Holding a slim 39-37 advantage to begin the fourth quarter, Townsley would score four quick points to give the Cougars a lead they would not surrender. A 12-4 run midway through the period would put SAU comfortably in front, and Townsley would seal the victory making five free throws down the stretch.
  • Konkel joined Townsley in double figure scoring with 11 points. Rachel Driesenga hauled in a team-high 10 rebounds.
  • After the slow shooting start, Spring Arbor hit 57 percent (13-for-23) of its second half shots while limited Indiana Kokomo to 32 percent (8-for-25) over the final two periods.
  • SAU was out-rebounded 34-27 on the night, but made up for the disparity by getting to the free throw line. The Cougars were 20-for-27 from the charity stripe while Indiana Kokomo was just 3-for-5.
